How CrossFit Could Help You Reduce Medications and Boost Health

At Lane Cove Chiropractic, we’re big believers in maintaining strength and overall fitness to support a healthy lifestyle. Both Dr. Mark and Dr. Julie have been doing CrossFit for several years, and we’ve personally experienced its benefits in staying strong, improving endurance, and staying resilient. Now, new research backs up what we’ve felt all along—CrossFit may do more than just keep you fit; it could help you manage your health in remarkable ways.

What the Research Says

A recent study published in OBM Integrative and Complementary Medicine examined the potential health benefits of CrossFit, focusing on its impact on medication use among participants in the UK. The findings are fascinating and inspiring for anyone looking to improve their health through physical activity.

Key Takeaways:

1. Reduced Medication Use:

  • Participants who engaged in CrossFit reported a decrease in their reliance on medications for chronic diseases.

  • This suggests that high-intensity, functional movements could improve health outcomes and potentially reduce the need for certain prescriptions.

2. Enhanced Health Markers:

  • The study highlighted improvements in cardiovascular fitness, body composition, and overall well-being.

  • These outcomes align with the comprehensive approach of CrossFit, which incorporates strength training, aerobic exercises, and flexibility work.

Why CrossFit Works

CrossFit combines varied, functional movements performed at high intensity, which means you’re building strength, endurance, and mobility in a way that mirrors everyday life. It’s not just about lifting weights; it’s about lifting your quality of life.

Dr. Mark and Dr. Julie have found that regular CrossFit sessions help maintain joint health, keep energy levels high, and build strength that supports us in both work and play. Whether we’re running seminars, adjusting patients, or chasing after our grandkids (looking at you Daisy!) staying strong makes it all easier and more enjoyable.

What This Means for You

If you’ve been thinking about trying a new workout, CrossFit could be a game-changer.

Here’s why:

1. Potential to Reduce Medications

Regular exercise can help manage chronic conditions, often leading to less reliance on prescription drugs. For example, improving cardiovascular health may help lower blood pressure, and consistent physical activity can regulate blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.

2. A Holistic Approach to Wellness

CrossFit isn’t just about working out—it’s about building a healthier lifestyle. Many participants find that the program motivates them to eat better, sleep more, and stay active outside the gym.

3. Community Support

The group setting in CrossFit fosters accountability and encouragement, making it easier to stay consistent and enjoy the process.

Getting Started

Before diving into CrossFit—or any high-intensity workout—here are a few tips:

  • Consult Your Healthcare Provider: If you have existing health concerns or are new to exercise, talk to your chiropractor or doctor first.

  • Start Slow: CrossFit is highly scalable, so you can adjust workouts to suit your fitness level and gradually build intensity.

  • Focus on Form: Proper technique is key to avoiding injuries, so don’t hesitate to ask your coach for guidance.
